But they shouldn't think that it has anything very useful to say about history. If anybody enjoys playing this as a game then more power to them. I don't want to leave the wrong impression. Then they might have designed a game around the realities of that war and come up with something truly admirable. They really needed to start with a clean sheet of paper and a designer or two who were really steeped in the history of WW II rather than cramming it and missing so much in the process. HoI2 and Doomsday represent significant if incremental improvements over the first iteration, but I stick by my original assessment: Grafting a WW II game onto the EU2 system was a bad idea. My first impression of the original HoI was that trying to graft a WW II game onto the EU2 game system was a very bad idea. Paradox has some gifted designers and I regard EU2 as a very successful game. One could go on in this vein at great length, but I think you get my drift by now.
It also did some effective ground attack work in the last year of the war (as well as Korea, where it was probably the best close-in ground support plane the UN forces had). It was a naval fighter, or in more modern parlance, a fleet air superiority fighter. Also, it really wasn't quite proper to call it an interceptor in the same sense that, say, the Spitfire was. In between the extremes of seriousness of those two gripes is something like this: Once you have researched and built, say, the F4U Corsair, it goes into the USAAF as an interceptor! Except for a test model or two, the USAAF never operated the F4U. No doubt this was done to balance the game, but things like this pretty well destroy whatever historical value that the game might have had. This largely cancels out the US edge in industrial efficiency. I also notice that the IC costs for equivalent items in Japan are roughly half what they are in the US. Now, how hard would have been for them to call him something like "Armor Leader" or "Armor Expert"? The game is just shot through with mistakes like that, and some that are far less trivial.įor instance, unless you play at the easiest setting, you can't get really close to duplicating the level of expansion of US industry.
